Pitbull Puppy Ear Cropping

We took our pups to get their ears cropped. Here are a couple of pictures of them when we picked them up at the vet. There are also a few more pictures on Page 5 of our Pitbull Gallery. We went to Kokua Pet on Dillingham in Kalihi for the cropping.

Just to let visitors know, other comments were deleted because it was the same thing 4 times. Anyway, just to let this poster know, even without their ears cropped, their ears were NOT down. That's why we cropped them. If they had good "down ears" like Angel, we would have left them as is. We like the look of females with their "ears down" - but these females never had ears down to begin with. So cropping them didn't put them up, nature did. Cropping just made them a little shorter.

To each is own, but I don't really like the cropped ears. It doesn't make them any more vicious, but I prefer the natural look. I have also seen people who have docked their pits' tails. This is also really ugly to me and unnatural. But like I said, to each is own.

This is ridiculous. Why would you do something like that to a wonderful creature.A true pit would not have it's ears cropped. It hurts the animal and it looks tacky. I really don't see the point in this foolishness. And i really don't know why doctors do this operation.

Good choice on having your dogs ears done. I had my two pits done this last week. I thought about it for a while and spoke to 4 different vets on the issue. I choose a vet that does not tape and rack after the surgery. He does a medium cut that has the pits ears standing immediately. I problem with the surgery is not the surgery itself, but the taping and racking for 10-14 days afterwards. I had my pits done in the morning and by 6pm they were running around the yard playing.

HEY I HAVE A RED NOSE PIT BULL I JUST GOT HIM HIS 9 WEEKS OLD AND I WANT TO GET HIS EARS CROPPED SOON IF U CAN PLEASE TELL ME A GOOD PLACE WERE TO GO IN MODESTO, CA THANKS

Maurice, congratulations on your puppy. My two are doing great - they both had the ears done by a vet that does not believe in racking. He does the cut and puts a collar on them for a week to keep them from messing with the stitches. In a week he removes the stitches. Both my puppies were playing around that evening and the next jumping in and out of the pool with the collar on so I believe in this vet "hand" - the puppies ears came out beautiful. I can't recommend anyone in Modesto because I'm in Texas. Call some of the local breeders for advice and vets - find one that does a cut not requiring the rack - that worked great for us. I think the worst part for the dogs is the racking so if you can avoid it do so. Good Luck.

i am having my pup done only b/c she has really long ears. i have a 2 yr old pit with natural ears and ended up having problems. see if she plays and hits her ears or gets roughed up she ends up with a big blood clot and swelling in her ear b/c some dogs have sensitive ears. im getting my pup done to avoid this problem. i have spent so much money each time i have to have my oldest pit's ears drained due to the pooling of blood. but i think pits look great with cropped or natural!!

holy crap haters! do human babys remember the surgery from getting their dick cut when their born? nope, i doubt the dogs do either... and the ear cropping help prevent earmites... so do some research treetards!

I think they look stuoid with their ears done!!!IT's such a painful process also!!!!I dont believe in Ear Cropping because they look so much better without it!!

At 2:01 AM, Blogger alex said...

I like pits with both type of ears. It all depends on the dog. However the issue of ears all comes down to esthetics. The concern I have is that I see all these Pits with their cropped ears(on whom the owners spent good money on ear cropping)but none of these dogs have their claws trimmed. That can actually cause health problems like splay feet and tendon damage....and that only costs $10.00 at the vet or groomer's. Get your priorities straight. Your dogs health is more important than it's looks. And as for the comment on ear mites, Regular ear cleaning and care of your dogs ears will keep fungus and mites away. If you can't take the time to clip your dogs claws and/or clean it's ears because you're too busy making vet appointments to have it's ears cropped instead, you shouldn't own a dog!!!!!

Hey guys your dogs look great. As for the people hating on cropped ears and saying its so painful, well yes it is painfull when the dogs are 6 months to a year old annd the cartilage in their ears are built up. But when they are young, under 3 or 4 months it basically painless. The day I got my two done they were both running wide open acting like nothing had happend.

13 WEEKS OLD 14 WEEKS TOPS IS THE OLDEST YOU CAN GET YOUR PIT BULLS EARS CROPPED. IF YOU FAIL TO DO SO AND GET THEM CROPPED ANYWAY (NOT SURE IF A VET WOULD PAST 14 WEEKS THOUGH) THEN YOU CAN RISK FLOPPING AS THE CARTILAGE HAS ALREADY SET. DON'T BOTHER. AND EAR CROPPING GOES FROM $175-$600+ DEPENDING WHERE YOU GO. DON'T GO FOR CHEAPER AS YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

Ear cropping looks fantastic for pitbulls, they look definitely elegant and prominent, but some says it's prone to having different ear disease because the protective covers were removed.

Hey the dogs look great i personally love pits their my favorite breed i have a 3 month male and we are planning on having his ears clipped in my opinion they look so much better this way they look cute with their long ears while their small but once they grow the clipped ears gives them their look

Poor thing. That looks really painful for the cuties. Their ears should be left alone! :(

You are all MORONS. How would you like your ears almost completely cut off? This is not tail docking and dew claw removal at age 3 days or less (to which I am not a fan.)It is PURELY for cosmetic benefit and does NOTHING for the domesticated dog like the pitbull. It only personifies the "image" of a "mean, aggressive" pitbull. NO PET should have to endure this ridiculous, HUMAN invented cosmetic torture for the sake of "looks." These innocent animals have to endure the UNNECESSARY pain of having their ears chopped off, taped and retaped until they are "standing perfectly" for WHAT? So they look like something humans perceive as correct for the breed? IGNORANT, period.

To everyone who thinks this is cruel, I say to you, your an idiot who just wants to make a big issue out of something minor. If its your dog, you can do whatever you want to to it. Before you get all pissy, I have a pit and he still has his ears. But trust me, I wanted to crop them. I decided against it because I dont think its worth 500 dollars to do so. Just like the guy above me pointed out, most men get circumsized as babies, do you think they had a choice? NO! But they sure as hell don't remember it. I think its cruel that your the owner of your dog! Hows that make ya feel?

Seriously though, this is something that has been done for many years. As long as your not raising your pit to fight, abusing it, and neglecting it of love and all of the essentials it needs, then there really is no problem. Keep up the good fight!

Why people get up set with ear cropping is beyond me. By ear cropping one isn't giving them any negative reputation. It's people that think like that, that gives them the bad rep. It's hypocrits who crontradict themselves that give pits a bad rep. Everything that is done to a dog is because of personal preference or fashion. It's so distrubing ....bs. If you feel that way you must ban the right to have any pet and be all for animal rights. Meaning people can't touch animals in any way much less eat animals or take them from their natural habitats because it's just cruelty. Stop being so anal people. Just don't reply to a post if you don't like it.

Your dogs are gorgeous!!! I just had my puppies ears done. We did alot of research before we did the ear crop and we have no regrets. I like their ears floppy or cropped, it all depends. For us we prefered the crop, as well as Isis's parents and grandparents have their ears cropped and she has an amazing blood line. To each their own. I think they look absolutley stunning with croppped ears.

At 8:56 PM, Blogger AniMail said...

You pro-crop/dock/mutilate folks make me ill. One of you compares circumcision which is done for sanitary reasons to ear cutting which is done for a person’s preference. If you think the ears will get infected, etc, if left natural than what about bloodhounds, spaniels, basset hounds and others with ears of even longer length? Should we just cut down all dogs ears because they are too inconvenient for us? To those who think they OWN their companion animals and indeed mis-name them as PETS: These beings have feelings and emotions of their own and it's not up to us to have their ears DONE. Any cutting, including one's tail, unless for an emergency operation, is inhumane, period. And finally, yes, I believe that we should protect and advocate for all animals who are mistreated, neglected or even disfigured due to human desire. And just like those who are "anal animal rights" people, I suggest you educate yourselves about how the cows, chickens, and pigs you may eat from every day are treated and kept in deplorable conditions. Don’t think so shallow folks. Consider the feelings of beings other than your own species. Heck, some of us don’t even treat others from our own species with any consideration. Peace. Oh yeah, use Spell-check if your grammar is not up to par. Thanks.

To those of you claiming that ear cropping as inhumane and cruel, get over yourselves. Cropping is a breed standard for many dogs, and is required if showing (ie: Great Danes, Dobermans, American Staffordshire Terriers or Pitbulls). If done at a young age, which is what is recommended, the pups are put under anesthesia, and after wards they should feel no pain at all, and will probably hardly notice they're there. Yes, it is for aesthetics, just like getting tattoos or piercings. This is a very minor surgery involving cartilage that isn't even fully developed yet, so it has barely any feeling to it. Please get off your high horses and stop being rude. What people decide to do with their dog's ears is their business, not yours.

Its really humorous how many people are misinformed about FACTS. For instance, there is a purpose for cropping the ears other than appearance and it is not to protect from ear mites or other ailments. The main reason APBT's have historically been cropped is to ensure that the owners dog doesn't lose in a fight due to the vulnerability of this area. So unless you are planning on fighting your pit, which might I remind everyone is cruel and ILLEGAL, cropping their ears has no direct benefit to the dog in most cases. Unlike what was said previously, the ears of any dog has numerous nerves and so saying they barely feel pain in this area is a major error in belief, In fact, many dog therapists believe that gently rubbing the cluster of nerve endings located at the tips of the ears of ALL dogs can be relaxing as well as providing therapeutic benefits. I know all my pups seem to enjoy this. Also I must say that anyone that does this to their dog for looks are selfish owners. as was previously stated, breed standards held by major dog associations like the AKC, UKC, etc... requiring the mutilation of animals is just one of the major reasons why these associations lead to the deterioration of canine happiness. Keep in mind that the AKC REFUSES to even acknowledge APBTs as a breed. This being a major contributing factor to the numerous anti-pitbull laws that have been put into place in recent years. As for comparing these procedures with vasectomies, remember that not all cultures practice this tradition at the time of birth and some do not perform vasectomies at all. as a matter of fact, some tribes in Africa perform this on adolescent males as a right of passage into manhood and do not acknowledge them as men unless they do this without any medical attention. However, I'm willing to put money on the opinion that if it was not for fear of expulsion from their own society, these young men would not be putting their health at risk for this traditional self-mutilation. Now as a previous Rottweiler breeder, I will say that some croppings are necessary to maintain a happy lifestyle for the dog. For example, if a rott's tail does not get docked, it can lead to health issues like injury to the tail its self due to the immense power of the appendage. By this I mean to say that when they wag their tail and hit things like coffee tables, doors, etc..., they chance causing injuries like blood clots, broken bones, and even nerve damage. keep in mind that the tail is an extension of the spine and that nerve damage and spines are not a combination that anyone wants to see. So to sum up everything I've written, instead of relying on the belief that it is just a matter of opinion, please try to identify the facts before deciding to remove your dogs "UNWANTED" parts!

At 7:46 PM, Anonymous erik said...

Also to AniMail, I agree with much of what was said by you but I must include that you most likely don't see blood and basset hound breeders cropping their dog's ears since it is the droopiness that makes these dogs so good at what they do which is tracking through scent. In fact, breeders prefer that the ears droop all the way to the nose when in the "smelling" position since their ears actually help them pick up the scent better by giving it a surface to contact the scent and therefore providing a means of better retaining the scent in case they lose the "trail".

For the post right before the last one with all the "facts" this has nothing to do with the cropping subject but, FYI I believe its called circumcision not vasectomy!!!

In my opinion, reward yourself with some vanity if you're truly willing to take great care of the dog for all of its life. I personally like pitbulls with cropped ears. They look handsome in my opinion. I have a 6 year-old blue pitbull and it's healthy and loving life.

They look VERY cute! Such sweet little things!

At 4:49 PM, Anonymous Erik said...

To Anonymous at 10:45 a.m.:
You are correct. I did make the mistake of calling a circumcision a vasectomy which is indeed a totally different procedure and I thank you immensely for pointing that mistake out. I guess it does prove that no one is perfect no matter how well informed. LOL. Now as for Anonymous at 8:36 a.m. I must say that I did not condemn this act of ear cropping, I only stated that it was a selfish act on the owners part if done only for looks. And since you did say that as long as you insure a long happy life for the dog, I must say that that gives me respect for you in a great way. But please remember that it is because people acquire Pit Bulls for purely the purpose of vanity is why this breed has become vulnerable to the neglect and abuse that it has. As you may know, many irresponsible owners have neglected this respect for the breed as you have undoubtedly given so please keep in mind that my pleadings were for these ruthless owners and not ones such as yourself.

I have a question, why can pits not be adopted out of state???? My sister and her boyfriend are trying to find a blue. It is just them, no kids no other pets. Huge yard, she's home all day. They are the perfect parents for a pit, yet we can not seem to find them a dog, 1 to 3 years old. We have tried in several states. Does any one know if there is a site for people looking for GREAT homes for their male blue pit?
