What is a "pitbull-type" dog

In reports of dog attacks, they always try to get the word "pitbull" in there when describing the dog that attacked. In a case in the UK, the dog which went after a family is described as a "pitbull type" dog. What exactly is a pitbull type dog? What is part pit? Did it just look like a pitbull? Or was it described as being like a pitbull just because it attacked people? If it's part pit, how do they know it wasn't the "other breeds" in the dog that caused it to attack.

Sorry - that just strikes me the wrong way. I never had dogs growing up and never really cared for them. But my husband's family has had pitbulls all his life. Now that I have had a chance to be around the breed, I know that not all pitbulls are terrors. I also know many other types of dogs/breeds of dogs that are just as likely to bite. I'm not afraid of any particular dog breed, I'm just wary of any dog that looks aggressive. I can also honestly say, that I don't feel threatened by any of the dogs we own. There is no fear that they will attack our family.

I think any pitbull lover agrees that it's frustrating and annoying to hear about the entire breed being talked down upon as if every dog in the breed is horrible and should be put to sleep.

Anyway - if you want to read the article that started me on this train of thought - Click Here.

i just got done reading the article...its so sad that the entire breed is being covered with the same blanket like that. sadly this type of thing is happening in others parts of the world. as of late quite alot on the mainland. we here in hawaii have a long history of pit bull love, so i doubt that that type of BS could take hold here. unless people moving here from areas of the mainland that have BSL start to bring their close-minded ignorance here with them. we must be on the watch for the first signs of BSL here. the best way to prevent it is to take good care to love, train and associate ( and in the case of aggressive animals, sadly, euthanize )our dogs well so that that type of attack never happens...best wishes to all, stan

While researching the breed because we wanted to adopt one of your puppies, my husband Rick and I came across a website featuring a K9 training unit for a police department. This police department, and forgive me, I forget where it was, was training German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Pitbulls alongside each other. At the 'graduation' for these dogs, the Shepherds and the Malinois had to be muzzled in case someone other than the handler's hand got too close to the dogs mouths and the dogs bit and held onto them. The pitbulls had no muzzle- there was no fear of their attacking or biting someone. In fact, as we furthered our research about pitbulls, it is stated that pitbulls, respectfully and wel socialized and cared for, are more inclined to attack other animals, not humans. It is sad that places, like California, and people are so against pitbulls. It is not the dog's fault that there is a stigma attached to them- it is the irresponsibility of the humans that do this.

in the UK "pitbull-type" covers any dog that "looks like" a pitbull and on thoses grounds they can take the dog from you and apply for a destruction order from the courts i know this from personal experiance i was given the options of having my dogs "destroyed" as the police like to call it or you can go to court and face a criminal record upto £5000 fine and possible prison sentance plus a ban from ever owning animals again. that is what the police told when they kept calling round to see if i wanted to sign the destruction order with out it going to court they repeatedly told me that under no circumstances that i would ever get my dogs back and that it could take upto a year before the case would even go to court 1 of my dogs was only 4 months old when they took her which the police went out of their way to highlight to me saying that if she was in "police kennels" for over a year i would be getting a "dangerous dog" back i told them that if they are going to kill my dogs because of the way they look and not because of somthing they have done then it would be by their hand and not mine. After 5months or so it went to court(the police were still asking me to sign destruction order the week before it went to court) and i had to prove that my dogs wernt dangerous....... i eventually got my dogs back quite abit worse for ware but still alive got pictures of them on faceparty.....(marley_81) if you want to see them and the condition they came back in ...... paul, UK, St Helens, mersyside
