Pitbulls=Crack Pipe

Wow - I just got an e-mail from MaxTheShelterDog.com and they forwarded a piece of dialog from a Fox News show in which Geraldo Rivera says some disturbing things. Well, they bother me at least. Here's the excerpt (from Fox News)

RIVERA: Well to me if you have more than one pit bull it's like having a crack pipe. There's only one reason for it. It's for sadistic reasons. To watch them...

O'REILLY: What if you just like the dog?

RIVERA: If you like one of the animals you have to understand that after two centuries of breeding they are genetically predisposed to abnormal violence. That is the take on it. And there's no dispute about that. You might get one at the shelter. You might be humanistic. You might care for them.

All of that is fine but the fact of the matter is if you have more than one pit bull why do you have more than one pit bull? And anybody — I'm a parent of five children. Anybody who has a pit bull around my kids is immediately shunned by me, because they are as if they are walking around with a weapon about to go off.

Now what is interesting, and I watched your discussion with the hip-hop expert, is the — you know pit bulls have become accessories to many of the kids. Not just ghetto youngsters. But many kids who feel alienated in some way, who feel that it is...

Max the Shelter Dog is taking submissions from people who have more that one pitbull. They are putting together quotes to send to Geraldo. If you want to share the reason you have more than one pitbull or your thoughts on his statement that the breed is predisposed to "abnormal violence" - send your comments and thoughts to nr@maxtheshelterdog.com.

Our family has more than one pit bull as a direct result of such damaging shows and articles as "pitbulls=Crack Pipe". At just one of our several local shelters in Arizona you can find around 50 pit bulls on any given day. We chose they dogs as pets to save them from the people who want to use them as a prop for their lifestyle or an illegal paycheck. These dogs are just like any other, they are scared and looking for affection. The bad reputation these pup's get is based on sleazy horrible people who keep them as a facade for the masculinity they lack and so desperately crave. The reason so many end up at the shelters is because of this particular type of person which is not a responsible pet owner and does not care about the animal, only what the animal can do for him. A person who takes an adorable pit bull puppy (those who have never seen one I suggest you google a picture) only a few weeks old and begins it's abusive training to make it a "killer" is the type of person to blame. I guarantee that under the same conditions those dogs go through you could make a poodle or a person just as harmful. If a person happens to be 6'3" tall and very muscular does that automatically mean he is someone to fear? What if all over the news were reports of 6'3" tall people who were commiting crimes and all of a sudden people started linking it to the fact that it was because they are 6'3" tall and they were built for aggression? That would be insanity and people would be running around in fear when they came across a tall person. I would have to explain to people who saw my 6'3" husband and say "oh it's ok he's very nice and does not commit crimes, I've trained him that way since we've been together. I actually rescued him from a very bad environment"
We have 3 pit bulls two of them we adopted at 4months old, one had a horrible wound on her head that took months to heal and she was terrified of men. One of our boys was 2yrs old when we adopted him he was covered in scratches and scars. We believe that some one tried to make him a fight dog. He does not fight ANYTHING, he actually thinks he's a chihuahua and curls all 65lbs up on any willing lap.
I undertand that there are some very aggressive dogs out there I myself once had a Black Lab that almost killed our rat terrier. I did not train the dog to attack other dogs he just snapped from what I suppose was years of irritation from our little dog. I don't believe that I should be afraid of Labs now nor do I fear for my life if my neighbor happens to have one. Hey but what if people started fighting Labs? I imagine they would be the next doggies of doom. "Own more than one Lab? Well you may as well just play Russian Roulet with your whole family"!!!
The person who wrote the ill concieved "crack pipe" article should have use a little common sense instead of jumping on the FEAR and stupidity banwagon but I guess that's the news for you.
