Angel is Loving Chicken

For the past 6-8 months, ever since we moved out of our other house, Angel just hasn't quite gotten back to her "normal" self. She has gained weight since we moved into our new house, but the skin irritation she began while we were living with family (between houses) never really did completely go away. It did get better, but even recently, she's had flair ups of irritation every now and then.

After reading more and more about raw diet and learning that sometimes it is VERY helpful with allergies and skin irritations, we decided to try it out for Angel. Maybe she was one of those dogs that just doesn't do well with all those "extra" ingredients commercial dog foods have. So, when we decided to switch some of our dogs over to raw, she was one of them.

I have to say, after just ONE week of raw feeding, we're already seeing a difference in her skin and coat. Before this, even as recently as a month ago, her coat and skin just looked like that of an "older" dog. She simply looked like she was aging. But now, after a week on raw, she's looking soooo much better and I think she's getting even closer to her "ideal" weight as well.

We'll share a picture that will give you an idea of what raw has done for Angel. Ever since her first litter, she had spots on her back end where hair had fallen out. It's always been something that just kind of stood out when you saw her from the back side (and not in a good way) - now those spots are not as noticeable.

In the picture you'll also see how irritated her skin was about a month ago. We had tried switching her food, we gave her anti-biotics, we used medicated shampoo, etc, etc, etc and still, her skin just didn't seem to ever get back to what it used to be. I really thought it was just her getting older and had almost accepted that she would never be the same again. But look at the picture below....you'll see a big difference.

The picture on the right was from a few days ago (after almost a week on raw). The picture on the left was from almost exactly one month before the other. That's pretty much one of the last pictures we have of her before she started on raw feeding.

To us, she just looks much healthier now than she did before she started on raw food. Her skin has cleared up, her coat is shiny, and the color of her coat is getting nicer too. On top of all of that, she LOVES her food. No more days when she isn't interested in eating her food. We're so happy to have her back on track to being the beautiful girl we know she is.

Pitbull Puppies Stolen In NC

I just read a small news article about two pitbull puppies being stolen by a guy possessing a gun. What's that all about? There wasn't a whole lot of details about what happened or why the guy did it, but it's pretty crazy the things that happen in our world today.

The stealer was charged with two counts of "larceny of dog" as well as robbery with a dangerous weapon.

I hope I never have to find out what it's like to be robbed at all, but for someone to take any of our dogs is not something I can even imagine.

Read the story at Citizen-Times.com.

Raw Food for Dogs

Have you ever read about, heard about, or learned about raw food for dogs? Sometimes people talk about a raw food "diet" or the BARF diet. It's funny, I never really considered myself to be the naturalistic/holistic type. I like lots of modern things and modern food for myself. So it's catching me my surprise that I'm interested in learning more about raw feeding for dogs.

With the increasing difficulty finding quality dog food in Hawaii that our dogs actually like and do well on AND that we can actually buy on a regular basis, I've been looking for alternatives for us to try. In doing so (researching different kinds and brands of foods) I came across the idea of "feeding raw."

Now, it's not that I'd never heard of it before, I just never really looked into it. When I first heard of it it seemed too "over the top" for me, too extreme. I mean, I'm into the dogs, but I didn't know if I was that into them. I was happy going to the store and just buying what dog food companies said was good food - food that they had developed after much of their own research.

But when our favorite foods are no longer being produced, when our second favorites are sold out half the time, and when the other quality dog food we try just aren't working for us and our dogs - I'm thinking it might be time to give the whole raw idea another look.

I've been doing lots of reading. There's a bunch of information about feeding raw dog food available over the internet. You will also be able to find good recommendations on hard copy resources on this topic as well. It's pretty interesting. You should give it a look. Only you can decide what's right/best for you and your dog, but I think we may try it out on a dog or two and see how it goes. We'll let you know what happens...

I wonder if we'll soon end up with a different answer to one of the questions we're asked the most, "What do you feed your dogs?"
