Crates Are Not Only for Naughty Dogs

I saw an ad for a dog crate that was for sale and the seller said something to the effect of the crate being for those times when your dog is naughty. That caused me to believe that the seller of the crate felt that the only time a dog should go in a crate is when he or she is naughty.

Now, we use crates quite a bit, and now that I'm going through a pack structure training program with our younger dogs, we use them even more. In our use of crates we see that dogs don't necessarily feel "punished" when they are in their crate. In fact, many of them are more comfortable there than anywhere else. It becomes their "place, their "spot," their security when things are going nutso around them (think New Year's Eve fireworks going off for hours everywhere).

After reading that ad, I just had to say that crates are not only for "naughty" dogs. Yes, they can be used in training, but they can also be very beneficial to the health and well being of your dog. It's not just a mean punishment to put a dog in a crate.

Pitbull Moose Playing Water

It's either been hot or super rainy. This picture was obviously taken on one of the hot afternoons. We were just playing around with the water and cooling off the dogs and ourselves. Our kids had lots of fun in the water too, but here's a picture of Moose trying to get a piece of that water.

Moose is 7 months old in this picture.

Allicia and Her Dog Lii

Here is a picture of our daughter Allicia helping us get Lii into a group photo. Allicia kept asking us and asking us if Lii can be her dog since our oldest daughter has her own dog (Beautiful). So finally we agreed and now she is responsible for helping to feed and take care of Liilii.

We just took this picture last night and will soon be sharing some of the group shots we got of the gang. If you have a myspace account, you can see some of the pics up in our My Photos Album. Our myspace url is myspace.com/808bluepitbull.

Pitbull Training Help

Lots of people ask about pitbull training. Our dogs are not house trained because they don't live in the house, but they are all crate trained. Most of what we know we either watched on Dog Whisperer or we read in training manuals and products. We share a couple of these resources on our website on the Pitbull Information page and even more on our Training Resources page.

Today I came across another resource that I thought I'd share with you. This one is simply called Pit Bull Training.

If you have unwanted behaviors you'd like to eliminate in your dog, maybe this resource can help.

Here's just some of what you'll discover...

  • The silly mistake most people make when trying to train their Pit Bulls ...and how it can actually make your dog harder to train.
  • The number one reason Pit Bulls do anything ...and how to tap into this amazing driving force behind Pit Bull behavior.
  • The simple "anchor" method that cuts training time by as much as 71% ...and makes Pit Bulls obey you like they were operated by remote control!

Pitbulls=Crack Pipe

Wow - I just got an e-mail from MaxTheShelterDog.com and they forwarded a piece of dialog from a Fox News show in which Geraldo Rivera says some disturbing things. Well, they bother me at least. Here's the excerpt (from Fox News)

RIVERA: Well to me if you have more than one pit bull it's like having a crack pipe. There's only one reason for it. It's for sadistic reasons. To watch them...

O'REILLY: What if you just like the dog?

RIVERA: If you like one of the animals you have to understand that after two centuries of breeding they are genetically predisposed to abnormal violence. That is the take on it. And there's no dispute about that. You might get one at the shelter. You might be humanistic. You might care for them.

All of that is fine but the fact of the matter is if you have more than one pit bull why do you have more than one pit bull? And anybody — I'm a parent of five children. Anybody who has a pit bull around my kids is immediately shunned by me, because they are as if they are walking around with a weapon about to go off.

Now what is interesting, and I watched your discussion with the hip-hop expert, is the — you know pit bulls have become accessories to many of the kids. Not just ghetto youngsters. But many kids who feel alienated in some way, who feel that it is...

Max the Shelter Dog is taking submissions from people who have more that one pitbull. They are putting together quotes to send to Geraldo. If you want to share the reason you have more than one pitbull or your thoughts on his statement that the breed is predisposed to "abnormal violence" - send your comments and thoughts to nr@maxtheshelterdog.com.

Mayor of Indiana Recants Call for Ban on Pitbulls

I just read an article at IndyStar.com and I wish more people would take the stance shared in this article - IT MAKES SENSE.

A Breed Specific Legislation punishes the majority of law-abiding citizens and only "declares war" on an entire breed because of the irresponsibility of a few, misguided owners.

Breeding Announcement

We took Li'ili'i for a breeding this weekend. Hopefully she gets caught. She was bred with Tubbs, a well known, local Sierra/Gaff male who is an established producer. If this breeding is successful, pups should drop around the first week of June. Here is a picture of Tubbs.

What's BIG to you?

Allen had a phone conversation the other day about Big Pitbull Heads. A guy asked him if our dog had a "big" head or a "huge" head. Allen, of course, said it would depend on what a person considered to be big and what one considered to be "huge."

So - out of curiosity, what do you consider to be a "huge" pitbull head (for a male)? And what would you consider to be big/decent/nice, but not "huge?"

Let us know, in inches, what your answers are - click on the comment link below and leave your answer.
